New worry for Cornish surfers

Last week, it was revealed that surfers who choose to ride waves in areas designated for swimmers face being taken to court and punished with antisocial behaviour orders. Sennen beach, near Land’s End, has always been a popular spot for surfers of all ages. However, it is also a popular destination for families, many of which have very young children, who enjoy splashing about in the water.

The beach has an area reserved for those who wish to swim in the sea without the risk of being struck by a rogue surfboard. Recently though, an increasing number of surfers have been disobeying the boundaries and riding the waves in this designated zone.

Furthermore, longboarders are increasingly refusing to use leashes. Leashes connect the ankles of the surfer to the board itself, preventing the longboards from drifting off after a fall and potentially striking swimmers. Lifeguards patrolling the beach are becoming more and more frustrated by the surfers and longboarders, particularly since they have no official powers that enable them to enforce the rules. Officially, lifeguards are meant to advise, rather than force people to obey the bylaws.

This frustration has caused the lifeguards to consult the Devon and Cornwall police, who are now contemplating whether or not to send a community support officer to the beach. The police force and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, who employ the lifeguards at Sennen beach, have worked together successfully before. The Beach Beat scheme in St. Ives and Newquay has tackled antisocial behaviour on these popular Cornish beaches.

A surfer in Florida gets caught on camera with a 6ft Black Tip shark as he jumps out of the water. Smyrna Beach in Florida is known to the surfers as ‘the sharkbite capital of the world’.

Personally I think the shark just wants to be in the photo, he did a good job of it anyway.

12 people have been bitten by sharks this year.

Mr Kem McNair the photographer said:

‘These sharks are very very common in these waters but I have never captured pictures like these,’

‘We see them all the time – if you ride a wave and the water is clear you may see two or three sharks in the length of one ride, and we see them jump numerous times a day.’

This guy is mad surely this water is quickly boiling?! Great pictures though. The water was so hot around his board it melted the wax and then started to burn his feet. Quite the close encounter!

GLOBAL SURF COMMUNITY RISES UP AGAINST BA SURFBOARD BAN

Thousands of surfers are petitioning to get the surfboard ban lifted. Surfers are now concerned that other airlines will follow suit and stop allowing Boards on their planes.

Anybody been affected by this ban? Personally I rent boards most places I go or friends tend to lend me theirs if I’m staying with them.

I tend to agree though I would like to see this ban lifted! Is it the same with Snowboards and skis?

News Ben Haworth wins the English Longboard Title

Ben Haworth from North Devon being the youngest surfer in English Longboard Title Final beat his fellow competitors to take the crown.

The competition was held in Watergate Bay. This win makes Haworth one of the best young Longboarders in the UK and will definately help him on the professional scene.

British Surf Team 2008

The British Junior Surfing Team was announced over the weekend. 12 youngsters from around the UK have been chosen to represent the British Junior Surfing Team in this years Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. Which is being held in the South West of France between the 24 May and 1 June.

Can you imagine being that young and chosen to represent your country it’s great for their surfing careers!

Surfing in SandyMouth Bay (Cornwall)

On a recent trip to my Aunt & Uncles in Cornwall I had the rare opportunity to take to the waves. I hadn’t surfed in around a year so was very eager to get out there and shake of the rust. But ney it was not to be on this wet and windy afternoon as soon as I walked excitedly down with my cousin’s 7ft board under my arm to SandyMouth Bay a lifeguard approached and told me it was too dangerous to surf! He did however allow me to bodyboard not so far out so not a total letdown. The dogs got a walk too
